About the Project

The fundamental freedom of feeling secure is a critical right that every individual is entitled to. The concept and experience of safety are subjective, differing from one person to another and across various circumstances. When someone expresses discomfort by stating, "I am not feeling safe," it opens up a wide range of possible meanings.

Our comprehensive primary and secondary research on this topic has led us to understand that "Safety" is a complex and multifaceted issue, one that cannot be addressed with a singular approach. Recognizing the depth and scope of this challenge, we have designed our solution, "Guardian," to provide a variety of options for individuals seeking assistance in unsafe situations.

Problem Statement

How might we develop a secure, collaborative application to ensure students feel safe at night?

Introducing Guardian, a mobile application designed to help users quickly respond to and connect with trusted individuals around them in unsafe situations.

Guardian is a mobile application that allows users to request assistance from nearby trusted friends if they feel unsafe at a particular location. It also provides suggestions for safe locations and routes based on recent incidents. Additionally, Guardian can help users add important contacts, so if they feel threatened, they can instantly send a message or make a call to their trusted contacts with just a click of a button.

Aiming to enhance people's sense of security while traveling from one location to another, we developed several strategies that can be effective in various situations. The choice of which safety method to use will be left to the discretion of the user, depending on their specific circumstances. The Guardian application encompasses four main features, each designed to serve as a means to assist the user in exiting an unsafe environment.

Safe Locations

Utilizing 'Locate a Secure Location' tools, we will recommend proximate havens where individuals can seek temporary refuge during times of distress.

Guardian Safety

Individuals can reach out to fellow protectors for assistance in times of trouble. They have the option to request aid from any user of the app or only those guardians who are in their personal contact list.

Safe Route

We have the capability to suggest secure pathways on maps to users, leveraging crime and accident statistics. Our application can incorporate models that are available from open-source platforms.

SOS Alert

During critical emergencies, users have the option to activate an SOS signal either by voice command or via the app. This action will dispatch notifications to their designated emergency contacts, nearby protectors, and emergency services like 911.
